Grains of Rice! For vocabulary!

Ms. Decaf sent this my way. You basically donate gramins of rice by getting vacabulary questions right. And if I know my friends, they would rock at this!

http://www.freerice.com/index.php

I'd forgotten about this one.

Until my music player "randomly" chose it for me.

From Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground (2002), his first really intensely critically praised album, as far as I know.
One of his more upbeat songs. I was lucky enough to catch this in concert when Conor came to D.A.R. Constitution Hall about a month ago. He actually played a few more from Lifted, surprising only because it's nowhere near being his latest release. So sad that I don't think his brother ever showed up though he was asking for him.

"Bowl Of Oranges"

The rain, it started tapping on the window near my bed.
There was a loophole in my dreaming, so I got out of it.
And to my surprise my eyes were wide and already open.
Just my nightstand and my dresser where those nightmares had just been.
So I dressed myself and left then, out into the gray streets.
But everything seemed different and completely new to me.
The sky, the trees, houses, buildings, even my own body.
And each person I encountered, I couldn't wait to meet.
And I came upon a doctor who appeared in quite poor health.
I said "There is nothing I can do for you
you can't do for yourself."
He said "Oh yes you can. Just hold my hand. I think that would help."
So I sat with him a while and then I asked him how he felt.
He said, "I think I'm cured. No, in fact, I'm sure.
Thank you Stranger, for your therapeutic smile."

So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone.
And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow.
But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself
It is best to compose a poem, an honest verse of longing or simple song of hope.
That is why I'm singing
Baby don't worry cause now I got your back.
And every time you feel like crying,
I'm gonna try and make you laugh.
And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad,
then we will wait for it to pass and I will keep you company
through those days so long and black.
And we'll keep working on the problem we know we'll never solve
Of Love's uneven remainders, our lives are fractions of a whole.
But if the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall.
Then I think we would see the beauty.
Then we would stand staring in awe at our still lives posed like a bowl of oranges,
like a story told by the fault lines and the soil.

And this. (No one in the video is the Conor.)

Though it sounds a bit darty. . .

Go Elf Yourself!

Here's mine.

The one on the left seems a bit off at times.

It is officially snowing in the nation's capital.

(This picture was not necessarily taken in the nation's capital.)

Playing Recklessly But Also the Potential to be Recklessly Good

(my official soundbite on the state of the Duke Men's Basketball Team this year)

Pocius is already out for the season, although Coach K didn't seem to be using him too often off the bench this year.

Are You the Cause of All the Pain Near My Heart?

Ultrasound of a Gall Bladder.

Slightly Defeatist Lyrics to Kid's Song

From the classic Rankin & Bass Rudolph Xmas special:

There's always tomorrow
For dreams to come true
Believe in your dreams
Come what may

There's always tomorrow
For dreams to come true
And so little time in a day
We all pretend
The rainbow has an end
And you'll be there my friend, someday

There's always tomorrow
For dreams to come true
Tomorrow is not far away

Advent(ure) Calendars

First of all, it must be said that I pretty much love advent calendars. I just wish wish wish that they lasted all year long.

Now, there are loads of online advent calendars, which is such a great thing, but I needed to draw everyone's attention to the Doctor Who advent calendar, esp. since it's counting down to the Xmas special over in Britain. (Us yanks can only hope some kind soul uploads the episode for download and that the BBC doesn't get to it before I can see just a smidge of it.) Now, if you don't want ANY DW spoilers for season 4 and beyond, you should stay away. A huge spoiler is write on the bottom of the corner of the web page, so BEWARE!

Also, I can't tell if the smell I smell is the coffee on my clothes or some sort of gas leak. I guess it could just be my feet. This is a mystery for the Doctor!
